용의 기원에 대해 그 설법은 다양하다. 악어에서 기원했다는 설이 있는가 하면 뱀에서 기원했다는 설도 있고 심지어는 돼지에서 기원했다는 설, 비 오는 날 하늘의 번개에서 기원했다는 설도 존재한다. 현재 많은 전문가들은 용은 뱀을 주체로 한 토템 종합물로서 뱀의 몸, 돼지의 머리, 사슴의 뿌리, 소의 귀, 야의 수염, 매의 발톱, 어류의 비늘을 결합한 산물이라고 했다. 전문가들의 이런 관점은 우리에게 원고사회의 생활정경을 전시해 줬다. 원고씨족사회때 뱀을 토템으로 하는 황하유역의 화하족은 기타 씨족을 전승하고 일부 씨족들과 연합해 거대한 씨족부락연맹을 구성했으며 용 토템을 구성했다.

1987년 하남성에서 약 6000년전의 앙소문화(仰韶) 초기의 무덤을 발굴했는데 남성 무덤주인의 주변에서 조개껍질로 만들어진 용조각을 발견했다. 이는 현재 우리가 발견한 최초의 용이며 "중화 제일 용"으로 불리고 있다. 내몽골에서는 옥으로 된 용을 발견했는데 모양이 아름답고 머리는 돼지를 닮았다. 이 옥룡은 5000여년의 역사를 갖고 있다.

3000년전의 상조시기, 청동기와 골기위에서 용을 흔히 볼 수 있었다. 그 시기의 갑옥룡(중국 서북부 내몽골에서 출토) 골문중에는 이미 "龍"자가 있었으며 쓰는 방법은 100여종이나 있었다.

2000여년전의 전국시기, 용은 비단그림위에 생동하게 그려져 있었다. 한조때에 와서 용의 모양은 오늘날의 용과 비슷하며 그 뒤로 각 조대의 가공을 거쳐 용의 모습은 점점 더 위엄있는 모습을 하고 있다
