냉동 수술에도 냉동 액체가 쓰인다. 예를 들어, 사마귀와 같은 피부에 난 종양을 없앨 때 냉동 수술법을 쓴다면 피가 나지 않는다. 액체 질소로 사마귀를 급속 냉동시켜 떼어내기 때문이다. 또 극저온 기술은 미인도 만든다. 얼굴의 모공이 넓어지면 피부가 거칠어 보이고 화장도 잘 먹지 않는다. 외국에서는 -196℃의 액체 질소에서 나온 차가운 기체 질소를 얼굴에 불어 모공을 좁히기도 한다.
■ 영생의 꿈, 냉동 인간
첨단 과학이 낳은 인체 보존 기술을 통해 미래에 깨어나기를 희망하며 깊은 잠에 빠져 있는 사람들. 바로 냉동 인간이다. 영하 196℃, 이 온도에서 인체는 늙지도 부패하지도 않고 그대로 보존된다. 냉동 인간은 영화 속 이야기만은 아니다. 미국의 심리학자 제임스 베드포드 박사는 1967년 간암으로 죽음을 맞이하게 되자 최초로 냉동 인간이 될 것을 자원했다. 그 후 2010년 현재까지, 스스로 냉동 인간이 되어 부활의 날을 기다리고 있는 사람은 세계적으로 4백여 명. 그중에는 만화영화 제작자로 유명한 월트 디즈니와 미국의 전설적인 야구 선수인 테드 윌리엄스도 있다.
미국 애리조나 주에 위치한 알코르 생명연장재단은 1972년부터 인체 냉동 보존 서비스를 시작했다. 고객이 불치병으로 사망하면 몸속의 혈액을 모두 뽑아내고 특수 부동액으로 대체한 후 영하 196℃에서 급속 냉동시킨다. 먼 훗날 불치병을 정복했을 때 냉동 인간을 녹여 생명을 연장시키겠다는 것이 목표이다. 인체를 냉동시켜 보존하는 것은 이론적으로는 가능하다. 콩팥 등 일부 기관은 냉동한 뒤에 기능이 회복되기 때문이다.
문제는 뇌의 기능이다. 특히 기억력을 다시 살려내는 일은 가장 풀기 어려운 숙제이다. 얼린 몸을 녹이는 일이 만만치 않기 때문이다. 영하 196℃도에서 서서히 온도를 높이며 시신에서 부동액을 빼내고 혈액을 몸에 다시 투여해야 하는데, 영하 130℃부터는 시신 내부에 남아 있는 수분이 날카로운 '얼음 결정'을 만들면서 세포를 파괴할 수 있다. 물론 세포 손상을 막을 수 있는 고효율의 동결 보조제를 만들기 위해 노력하고 있지만 아직은 어렵다. 전문가들은 2045년께에나 인체 냉동 보존 기술로 소생한 최초의 인간이 출현할 것으로 전망한다. 많은 사람은 냉동 인간의 부활을 꿈꾼다. 불로장생의 꿈은 여전히 인간의 영원한 꿈이기 때문이다.

(상파울루=연합뉴스) 김재순 특파원 = 세계 최대의 가톨릭 국가인 브라질의 국민 다수가 현재의 인류를 신과 진화론의 공동 작품으로 인식하고 있는 것으로 조사됐다고 현지 일간지 폴랴 데 상파울루가 2일 보도했다.
보도에 따르면 여론조사기관 다타폴랴(Datafolha)의 조사 결과 응답자의 59%가 "인류는 수백만년 전부터 '덜 진화된' 생명체에서 진화돼 왔으며, 진화 과정은 신의 인도 아래 이뤄어졌다"고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 창조론과 진화론을 모두 일정 부분 인정하면서도 '신의 역할'에 대한 믿음이 강하다는 사실을 의미한다.
응답자의 25%는 "신은 1만년 전쯤 오늘날과 같은 모습을 가진 인류를 단번에 창조했다고 믿는다"고 답했다. 기독교 성경에 등장하는 아담과 이브가 인류의 조상이라는 주장을 전적으로 신봉한다는 의미다.
반면 8%는 "인류는 '덜 진화된' 생명체로부터 수백만년 동안 진화를 거듭해 왔으며, 이 과정에 신의 참여는 없었다고 생각한다"고 답했다. 순수 진화론의 입지가 상대적으로 적은 셈이다.
신문은 이번 조사 결과가 미국인들을 대상으로 한 조사와 상당히 다른 양상을 보이고 있다고 전했다.
갤럽이 지난 2008년 미국인을 대상으로 실시한 조사에서는 '신이 참여한 진화' 36%, '신의 창조' 44%, '순수 진화' 14% 등으로 나타난 바 있다.
한편 교황청 통계처가 발표한 '교회 통계연감 2006년'에 따르면 전 세계 가톨릭 신자는 세계 인구의 17%에 해당하는 11억3천75만명이며, 이 가운데 브라질이 1억5천781만명으로 가장 많았고 멕시코가 9천637만명으로 뒤를 이었다.
반면 가톨릭의 본류라 할 수 있는 유럽에서는 이탈리아가 5천645만명, 프랑스가 4천642만명으로 파악됐다.

여태까지 의학에서는 404병 하나하나의 원인을 찾아내고 고친다는 생각이었으나 그런 사고방식이 바뀌었다. 즉, ‘404병은 한 가지 병’이라고 해도 지나친 말은 아닌 것이다.
사람의 몸에 생기는 병의 종류에는 400여 가지가 있다. 어떤 학설은 404가지로 단정하기도 한다. 그러나 인체에는 365 골절이 있어서 실제 병의 종류는 365가지로 볼 수 있고 그 수로 보자면 더 많은 365 종에서 400여 가지의 병이 발생할 수도 있다.

모든 병의 근본은 냉이다. 그리고 과식이 원인이다. 열사람의 환자 중 아홉 사람이 냉을 가지고 있는 것을 임상에서 볼 수 있다. 또 과식이 병의 원인이 된다는 것은 일반적인 상식이기도 하다.
어떤 종류의 음식은 냉을 직접 일으키기도 한다. 원래 냉이란 천기의 영향으로 찬바람이 인체에 침입하면 냉이 된다. 손발이 찬 것 만이 냉증이 아니다.
남녀의 구별 없이 인체의 하복부에 본부격으로 자리 잡고 항상 아랫배가 차면서 손발이 차지는 것이다. 의학계의 보고에 의하면 냉증은 심장을 중심으로 체온이 37°C 내외이고 하반신은 온도가 낮으며 흔히 발의 온도는 31°C 이하라는 것이 확인되었다. 이와 같이 발목 아래가 저온인데 비해 상반신이 더운 상태를 냉이라고 한다.
그러므로 발을 아무리 덥게 해도 상반신과 발의 온도 차이가 나면 냉증의 울타리에서 벗어날 수 없다. 남녀불문하고 병의 원인을 찾아 보면 십중팔구는 냉에서 시작되고 특히 여자에게 더 많은 것을 발견할 수 있다.
◇남녀의 냉병
여자의 아랫배가 차면서 수족이 얼음장 같이 찬 증상은 생리적인 병(생리통, 생리불순 등)을 초래하고 냉을 흘린다.
여자의 자궁에 불순물이 생기면서 내의가 깨끗하지 못하다. 남자의 냉은 아랫배가 항시 차면서 수족이 차고 대소변에 이상을 가져오면서 변비, 설사, 소변빈삭증이 생기고 남자의 생명과 다름이 없는 양기가 멀리 떠나버린다.
◇냉을 예방하는 약
여자에게는 한방에서 사물탕이며 남자에게는 보중익기탕(補中益氣湯)이 명약이다. 자가요법으로는 남녀를 불문하고 반신욕을 자주하는 것이 최상의 가정치료법이다
부처님은 생로병사에서 해탈하기 위하여 출가하였고, 거사여래인 유마거사는 옛 부처님의 화신으로서 이와 같이 크게 성취하였지만 결과적으로 병이 났습니다. 그러니 이 불법을 어떻게 배울까요? 유마거사 뿐만 아니라 석가모니불조차도 81세가 되어서 열반에 들었는데, 등에서 찬 바람이 일어 병이나 돌아가셨습니다. 왜 등에서 찬 바람이 일어났을까요? 부처님은 젊은 시절 설산에서 6년 동안 고행하셨기 때문입니다. 이제 여러분들은 정좌할 때는 몸을 잘 덮기 바랍니다. 부처님 당시에는 이런 설비가 없었습니다. 그래서 고질병이 되었습니다. 부처님이 한 번은 이 고질병이 도져서 동생인 아난더러 탁발을 나가 소유(酥油:소젖이나 양젖을 바싹 말려서 만든 기름ㅡ역주)를 얻어와 약을 달이라고 했습니다. 아난은 유마거사의 집에 탁발을 갔다가 유마거사에게 한 바탕 꾸지람을 당했는데, 본 경의 뒷부분에 가면 말할 겁니다. 우리 중생들은 병이 있는데, 왜 제불보살도 병을 여일 수 없을까요? 이건 큰 문제요 화두이니 참구해 보아야합니다.
우리가 불경을 보면, 부처님과 부처님이 서로 만났을 때는 서로 이렇게 안부 인사를 묻습니다. “병도 적으시고 번뇌도 적으십니까? 중생들은 제도하기 쉽습니까?” 이로써 알 수 있듯이, 부처를 이루어 세간에 몸을 나타낼[現身] 때는 병을 면할 수 없으며 중생을 제도하는 번뇌도 면할 수 없습니다. 중생은 제도하기 쉽지 않음은 당연합니다. 때로는 제도하면서 부처님조차도 고뇌를 일으켜야 합니다. 어떤 학우들은 편지로 제 안부를 묻기를, “병도 적으시고 고민도 적으십니까?” 하는데, 저는 보고나서 정말 웃지도 울지도 못할 지경입니다. 저도 부처가 아니고 상대도 부처도 아니니까요.
그 병 때문에 국왕․ 대신․ 장자․ 거사․ 바라문 등과 여러 왕자들 그리고 그 밖의 관리 등 헤아릴 수 없는 수천의 사람들이 모두 찾아가 문병하였다.

유마거사가 병이 났다는 소문이 전해지자 국왕에서부터 각계의 인사들에 이르기 까지 수천 명이 다들 문병을 갔습니다. 그 당시 인도 전체의 인구가 얼마 되지 않았는데 이렇게 많은 사람들이 그를 보러 갔으니 온 나라에 파문을 일으켰습니다. 유마거사의 도덕과 학식의 위풍이 얼마나 컸는지를 알 수 있습니다.
그를 찾아온 사람들에게 유마힐은 몸의 병을 구실로 널리 설법을 했다.
