박 교수는 1992년 역사학계에서 위서(僞書)로 평가하고 있는 ‘환단고기(桓檀古記)’와 ‘단기고사(檀奇古史)’에 기록된 일식 등 천문현상을 자연과학적인 방법으로 증명, 이들 책의 내용을 사료적 가치로 끌어올려 화제가 됐다. 박 교수의 이같은 접근 방식은 문헌자료 부족으로 답보상태를 면치 못하는 상고사 연구의 지평을 넓혀주는 것으로 주목을 받았다.

발해시대 대야발이 편찬하고 황조복이 중간했다는 단기고사와 고려시대 이암이 썼다는 환단고기가 비록 위서라고 해도 그 내용이 사실일 가능성이 있으므로 이를 천문학적 방법으로 고찰했다.

이들 책에는 일식기록이 모두 10번 나오며 13대 단군 홀달 50년(BC1733년)에 오성취루(五星聚婁)라는 기록이 두 책 모두에 나와있다. 박 교수는 특히 수성, 금성, 화성, 목성, 토성 등 5개 별이 한자리에 모인 것으로 추정된 오성취루에 주목했다. 각각의 별의 운행을 추적한 결과 실제로 BC 1734년 7월13일 일몰직후 금성, 목성, 토성, 수성, 화성 그리고 추가로 초승달까지 일렬지어 하늘에 나타나는 장관이 연출된 것을 확인했다.

박 교수는 “밝은 6행성이 한 곳에 모이는 것은 천문학적으로 매우 드문 현상으로 BC 1700년대의 기록과 1년차이로 실존했다는 사실은 주목할 만하다”며 “5행성 결집은 BC1716년 1월30일에 또 있는데 이 경우 태양을 중심으로 좌우로 갈리게 돼 관측되지 않으며 BC2000년에서 BC1450년까지 5행성 결집은 1953년 2월25일 새벽 단 한번 나타난다”고 말했다.

환단고기의 단군조선에 관한 기록에는 다양한 천문현상이 나타난다. 그 중에서 특히 눈길을 끄는 것이 오성취루 현상이다.

오성취루란 목성과 화성, 토성, 금성, 수성이 나란히 늘어선 것이다. 환단고기에는 이러한 장관이 단군조선 때 나타났다고 구체적으로 기록되어있다.

최초로 이 기록에 주목한 사람은 서울대 천문학과의 박창범 교수. 그는 단군조선 시대의 천문현상을 과학적으로 검증한 논문을 발표했다.

천문현상을 추적해가면 그 현상이 나타나는 시기는 물론 관측자의 위치도 알 수 있기 때문에 연대를 규명하는데 중요한 역할을 한다고 한다.

환단고기에 따르면 오성취루 현상은 서기전 1733년에 나타난다. 천문관측 프로그램에 입력해본 결과, 일 년 전인 서기전 1734년 7월 13일 초저녁에 다섯 개의 별이 모이는 것을 볼 수 있다. 1년의 오차가 나지만 천문학계에서는 거의 정확한 것으로 보고 있다.
