오늘 저는 가슴 벅차고
한 편으로는 무거운 책임감을 느끼면서 국민 여러분 앞에 섰습니다.
이제 우리에게 새로운 국운이 활짝 열리고 있음을 실감합니다.

지난 주 미국에서 열린 G20 피츠버그 정상회의에서
내년 11월 G20 정상회의를 한국에서 개최하기로 결정하였음을
국민 여러분께 보고드립니다.

회의를 끝내고 좁은 출입구로 나오면서
몇몇 정상들이 제 어깨를 감싸안으며 축하인사를 보내왔습니다.

저는 그 순간 만감이 교차했습니다.
'드디어 대한민국이 세계의 중심에 우뚝 설 계기를
맞게 되었구나,
우리 국민이 정말 대단하구나,
이런 국민의 대통령이라는 게 너무나 자랑스럽다'는 생각이
스쳐 지나갔습니다.

제가 더 열심히,
최선을 다해야 하겠다는 각오도 다졌습니다.
제가 오늘 이 자리에 선 것은
'대한민국 국민은 세계가 인정할만큼 위대하다'는 것을
말씀드리고 싶어서입니다.

우리는 불과 100여 년 전인 1907년,
헤이그 만국평화회의에 입장도 하지 못했습니다.

당시의 국제질서에 항의했습니다.

하지만 이제 우리 대한민국은
세계 선도국가들이 인정하는 국제사회의 주역이 된 것입니다.
남이 짜놓은 국제질서의 틀 속에서
수동적인 역할에 만족했던 우리가,
새로운 틀과 판을 짜는 나라가 된 것입니다.

이러한 성과는
그 동안 국민 모두의 희생과 노력이 있었기 때문에 가능했습니다.
위대한 국민 여러분께 다시 한 번 감사를 드립니다.

주요 20개국 정상들의 모임인 G20 정상회의는
단순한 협의기구가 아닙니다.

국민 모두가 한 마음으로 뭉쳐 외환위기를 이겨냈습니다.
지금은 전대미문의 세계적 경제위기를
누구보다 빠르게 극복해내고 있습니다.
또한 녹색성장을 통해
인류에 새로운 발전모델을 제시하고 있습니다.

세계가 모두 우리를 인정하고 있습니다.
G20 의장국이 되고,
내년에 G20 첫 정례 정상회의를 한국에서 개최하게 된 것이
바로 그 결과입니다.

세계가 우리를 존중하는 만큼
우리도 우리 스스로를 존중합시다.
또 상대를 인정하고 존중합시다.
이제 자신감을 갖고
당당하게 세계와 미래를 향해 나아갑시다.

국민 여러분,
위기는 벗어났을지 모르지만
어려움은 계속되고 있습니다.
기업에는 봄바람이 불어오기 시작했지만,
서민들의 생활은 아직도 겨울입니다.
며칠 후면 추석인데
일자리가 없어 고향에 가지 못하는 젊은이들을 생각하면
가슴이 아픕니다.

지금까지 국민 여러분께서는
힘든 것을 참고 잘 해 주셨습니다.
조금만 더 참고 견뎌주십시오.
서민들이 허리를 펴고,
일하고 싶은 젊은이들이 일자리를 찾을 수 있는 날이
머지않아 오지 않겠습니까.
그 날이 올 때까지 저도, 공직자들도
밤잠을 줄이면서 최선을 다하겠습니다.

존경하는 국민 여러분,
대한민국은 지금 국운 상승의 기회를 맞고 있습니다.
세계의 선도국가로 도약할 수 있는
절호의 기회가 찾아왔습니다.
내년 G20 정상회의 개최를
우리 경제뿐만 아니라
법과 윤리, 정치문화, 시민의식, 그리고 문화예술에 이르기까지
우리 사회 전반의 국격(國格)을
확실히 높이는 계기로 만들어 나갑시다.

우리 모두가 힘을 합쳐
선진일류국가를 반드시 만들어냅시다.
저는 위대한 우리 국민을 굳게 믿습니다.
