[이데일리 양이랑기자] 개혁·개방의 포문을 연 지 30년, 중국은 세계 3위 경제대국으로 부상하는 등 놀랍도록 발전했다. 글로벌 금융위기로 각국 경제가 위축되면서 자본주의가 시험대에 오른 가운데 이같은 발전상은 더욱 빛나 보인다.

그러나 19일(현지시간) 영국 이코노미스트지는 `중국이 세계를 보는 방식과 세계가 중국을 보는 방식`이라는 제목의 기사에서 이같은 발전상 이면에는 내부적인 정치 및 경제적인 문제들이 산재해 있다고 지적했다.

현재 자본주의가 공황상태에 놓여있는 가운데 중국은 비교적 안전한 것처럼 보인다. 유럽, 일본 모두 전후 최악의 경기후퇴에 진입했고, 세계 최대 경제대국인 미국도 `수퍼 파워`를 잃었다.

중국의 지도자들은 `패권주의`를 추구하지 않는다고 밝혀왔지만, 중국이 스스로를 `세계의 중심`이라고 인식하고 있다는 것은 공공연한 사실이다.

원자바오 중국 총리도 더 이상 "중국은 자국의 경제 발전에 초점을 두고 있으며, 세계 무대에서는 겸손한 역할자를 추구한다"는 입장을 고수하지 않는다. 그는 중국을 `위대한 힘(great power)` 이라고 묘사하면서, 미국의 `방탕한` 소비에 대해 우려를 나타내기도 한다.

게다가 전 세계적으로 `자본주의` 경제 발전 모델에 대한 의구심이 짙어지는 가운데, 사회주의 시장경제를 도입하고 있는 중국에서 이같은 체제에 대한 반대의 목소리도 높아지고 있다. 중국의 좌파 국가주의자들은 현 시기를 시장경제 체제를 중단할 수 있는 기회로 보고있다.

이 시기에 버락 오바마 대통령의 역할은 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 장기적인 관점에서 오바마 대통령이 임기 내에 중국을 다자무역 시스템에 편입하도록 유도하지 못한다면 역사는 그를 `실패했다`고 평가할 것이다.
