세계 4대 박물관 중 하나인 미국 뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄박물관이 다음 달 4일(현지시간)부터 개막되는 '황금의 나라, 신라'전을 앞두고 28일 언론을 초청해 사전 공개 행사를 했다.
행사에는 100여명의 미국, 일본, 중국 등의 기자들이 참석했다.
메트로폴리탄박물관은 이날부터 박물관에 기부금을 내는 회원 등을 상대로 1주일간 전시회를 한 뒤 다음 달 4일부터 내년 2월23일까지 일반인을 대상으로 본격적인 전시회를 한다.

이번 전시회는 5년의 준비를 통해 이뤄졌고 이 과정에서 반가사유상의 국외 반출 논란 등 우여곡절이 있었다.
지난 2008년 드니스 라이디 메트로폴리탄 큐레이터가 국립경주박물관에서 강연할 때 "신라 유물을 메트폴리탄에서 전시하는 것은 어떻겠느냐"는 경주박물관 직원의 제의에 라이디 큐레이터가 "좋다"고 대답한 게 계기가 됐다.
전시회를 앞두고 문화재청이 반가사유상의 훼손 가능성을 이유로 반출을 허락하지 않았다가 이를 번복하기도 했다.
미국 관람객들에게 선보일 신라 유물은 반가사유상과 대표적인 신라 금관 중 하나인 황남대총 북분 금관(국보 191호)을 포함한 국보 10점, 보물 14점 등 금제 장신구와 희귀 공예품, 불교 미술품 등 130여점이다. 전시품들은 국립중앙박물관과 국립경주박물관의 소장품이다.
캠벨 관장은 "서구에서 최초로 신라 미술만을 집중적으로 조명하는 전시회"라고 말했다.
이소영 메트로폴리탄박물관 큐레이터는 "최소 10만명 이상의 관람객이 찾을 것으로 예상한다"고 말했다.
전시 기간이 추수감사절, 크리스마스, 연말연시 등 연휴 기간과 겹쳐 100만∼150만명 정도의 관람객이 방문할 것이라는 예측이 나오고 있다. 메트로폴리탄박물관의 연간 관람객 수는 650만명 정도다.

전시회는 특별 전시실에서 열린다. 메트로폴리탄에 특별 전시실은 3곳이 있는데 신라전이 열리는 장소는 관람객들이 가장 많이는 찾는 곳 중 하나인 그리스·로마 전시실 바로 옆이다.
전시실은 신라의 수도 경주에서 직접 '천년 왕국'의 유물을 보는 듯한 분위기를 최대한 살렸고 왕족·귀족 무덤의 출토품, 신라에 유입된 외국 유물, 불교 미술품 등 3개 코너로 구성돼 있다.
신라 고분 중 가장 큰 황남대총과 주변의 풍광이 담긴 동영상을 보면서 들어서면 무덤에서 발굴된 신라 금관과 금제 허리띠, 장신구, 토기, 금속기 등 다양한 유물이 전시돼 있다.
특히 신라 금관은 화려함과 정교함, 우아함으로 현지 언론 기자들의 주목을 받았다.

울트라 HD TV인 '85S9'를 통해 생생한 화질로 석굴암을 보여주고 삼성미술관 리움의 디지털 인터랙티브 솔루션인 '리움(Leeum) 디지털 돋보기'로 신라 유물을 세세하게 볼 수 있도록 했다. '리움 디지털 돋보기'를 이용하면 유물의 세부까지 생생하게 관찰할 수 있고 360도 회전 기능으로 정면에서 보이지 않는 부문까지 감상할 수 있다.
메트로폴리탄박물관은 전시회 기간에 금 공예 기술 시연, 신라 장신구에 대한 큐레이터와 고고학자의 대화, 설 페스티벌 등 다양한 프로그램을 제공한다.

행사에는 100여명의 미국, 일본, 중국 등의 기자들이 참석했다.
메트로폴리탄박물관은 이날부터 박물관에 기부금을 내는 회원 등을 상대로 1주일간 전시회를 한 뒤 다음 달 4일부터 내년 2월23일까지 일반인을 대상으로 본격적인 전시회를 한다.

이번 전시회는 5년의 준비를 통해 이뤄졌고 이 과정에서 반가사유상의 국외 반출 논란 등 우여곡절이 있었다.
지난 2008년 드니스 라이디 메트로폴리탄 큐레이터가 국립경주박물관에서 강연할 때 "신라 유물을 메트폴리탄에서 전시하는 것은 어떻겠느냐"는 경주박물관 직원의 제의에 라이디 큐레이터가 "좋다"고 대답한 게 계기가 됐다.
전시회를 앞두고 문화재청이 반가사유상의 훼손 가능성을 이유로 반출을 허락하지 않았다가 이를 번복하기도 했다.
미국 관람객들에게 선보일 신라 유물은 반가사유상과 대표적인 신라 금관 중 하나인 황남대총 북분 금관(국보 191호)을 포함한 국보 10점, 보물 14점 등 금제 장신구와 희귀 공예품, 불교 미술품 등 130여점이다. 전시품들은 국립중앙박물관과 국립경주박물관의 소장품이다.
캠벨 관장은 "서구에서 최초로 신라 미술만을 집중적으로 조명하는 전시회"라고 말했다.
이소영 메트로폴리탄박물관 큐레이터는 "최소 10만명 이상의 관람객이 찾을 것으로 예상한다"고 말했다.
전시 기간이 추수감사절, 크리스마스, 연말연시 등 연휴 기간과 겹쳐 100만∼150만명 정도의 관람객이 방문할 것이라는 예측이 나오고 있다. 메트로폴리탄박물관의 연간 관람객 수는 650만명 정도다.

전시회는 특별 전시실에서 열린다. 메트로폴리탄에 특별 전시실은 3곳이 있는데 신라전이 열리는 장소는 관람객들이 가장 많이는 찾는 곳 중 하나인 그리스·로마 전시실 바로 옆이다.
전시실은 신라의 수도 경주에서 직접 '천년 왕국'의 유물을 보는 듯한 분위기를 최대한 살렸고 왕족·귀족 무덤의 출토품, 신라에 유입된 외국 유물, 불교 미술품 등 3개 코너로 구성돼 있다.
신라 고분 중 가장 큰 황남대총과 주변의 풍광이 담긴 동영상을 보면서 들어서면 무덤에서 발굴된 신라 금관과 금제 허리띠, 장신구, 토기, 금속기 등 다양한 유물이 전시돼 있다.
특히 신라 금관은 화려함과 정교함, 우아함으로 현지 언론 기자들의 주목을 받았다.
무덤 출토품 관람을 끝내면 중앙아시아와 중국에서 제작된 것으로 추정되는 타출기법의 은잔, 흑해 지역 또는 중앙아시아에서 만든 것으로 보이는 황금 보검, 로마 유리그릇 등 신라로 유입됐던 외국 유물들이 기다리고 있다. 신라가 유라시아와 경제·문화 교류를 했고 실크로드를 통한 광범위한 동서 문화 교류의 네트워크 안에서 입지를 공고히 했음을 보여준다.

메트로폴리탄박물관은 반가사유상이 전시된 공간에 네 명의 보안 직원을 배치했고 반가사유상 앞에는 전담 직원을 한 명을 두기로 했다.

울트라 HD TV인 '85S9'를 통해 생생한 화질로 석굴암을 보여주고 삼성미술관 리움의 디지털 인터랙티브 솔루션인 '리움(Leeum) 디지털 돋보기'로 신라 유물을 세세하게 볼 수 있도록 했다. '리움 디지털 돋보기'를 이용하면 유물의 세부까지 생생하게 관찰할 수 있고 360도 회전 기능으로 정면에서 보이지 않는 부문까지 감상할 수 있다.
메트로폴리탄박물관은 전시회 기간에 금 공예 기술 시연, 신라 장신구에 대한 큐레이터와 고고학자의 대화, 설 페스티벌 등 다양한 프로그램을 제공한다.
