이번 총선은 18대 총선(46.1%)보다 8.2%포인트나 높은 투표율을 보였다. 야권이 기대했던 60%에는 못 미쳤지만 20년 만에 총선 투표율이 바닥을 치고 다시 높아진 것은 이들 젊은 세대의 투표 참여가 크게 작용했다는 평가다. 오전에 비해 오후에 투표율이 급속도로 높아진 것도 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)에서 젊은층의 투표를 독려했기 때문이라는 분석이 많다.
넥타이-하이힐 부대로 불리는 2030세대가 이처럼 투표장으로 많이 나온 것은 현 정권에 대한 불신이 반영됐다는 분석이 다수다. 청년 실업, 고용 불안, 경제 양극화의 고통을 현 정부가 해결해 주지 못한 데다 새누리당 역시 현 정권의 대안세력으로 보기에는 공공성, 사회 정의 측면에서 미흡하다는 평가를 내린 것으로 보인다.

호남에서 민주당이 전북 11곳 중 9곳, 광주 8곳 중 6곳, 전남 11곳 중 10곳을 차지했다. 제주 3곳도 모두 민주당이 가져갔다. 호남에서 민주당이 놓친 곳은 모두 통합진보당이나 무소속이었다.
의미가 있다면 공고하던 새누리당 텃밭이라고 여기던 PK에 균열 조짐이 보인다는 점이다. 문재인 민주당 상임고문이 부산 사상에서 압도적 표 차이로 이겼고, 사하을의 조경태 의원은 3선에 성공했다. 의석은 두 곳에 그쳤지만, 민주당 후보들의 지지율이 40% 이상인 지역구도 속출했다. 부산은 16대 대선 당시 노무현 민주당 후보에게도 30%의 지지율을 허락하지 않은 곳이다.

반면 18대 14석으로 충청권 최대 의석을 유지했던 자유선진당은 충남 3곳만 차지하며 제3당의 자리도 통합진보당에 내줬다.
정치권 관계자는 “박근혜 비상대책위원장이 부산과 충청권을 여러 번 방문하고 공을 들인 것이 어느 정도 표심에 반영된 것 같다”고 말했다.
