WCC는 26일부터 내달 2일까지 스위스 제네바에서 중앙위원회를 개최하며, 오는 27일 오후(현지시간) 158명의 중앙위원들이 참석한 가운데 WCC 사무국 총책임자인 사무총장을 선출한다.

내년 1월 5년 임기(1차례 연임 가능)를 시작하는 사무총장에는 전 세계에서 총 23명이 출마했으나, 인터뷰 등을 통한 압축 절차를 거쳐 한국의 박성원 목사(61.영남 신학대 석좌교수)와 노르웨이 출신의 울라프 F.트비트 목사(49.루터교회) 등 2명이 최종후보로 남았다.

1948년 출범한 WCC는 110개국 349개 교회와 교단을 포괄해 선교와 봉사, 평화를 위해 활동하는 교회 협의체로, 로마 가톨릭을 제외한 대다수 개신교회와 정교회, 성공회 등 전 세계 5억6천만 기독교인들을 대표한다.

유엔 창설을 제안했던 WCC는 인종갈등, 평화, 인권, 평등, 복지 등의 문제에 있어서 진취적인 입장을 보여왔으며, 1970∼80년대 한반도 화해 및 평화정착, 90년대 북한 식량지원 등에서 적극적인 활동을 펼쳤다.

WCC 사무총장은 `개신교의 교황', `개신교계의 유엔 사무총장' 등으로 불릴 만큼 영향력이 크지만, 창설 이래 유럽, 미국, 남미, 아프리카 등에서 6명의 총무가 배출됐을 뿐 아시아 출신은 없었다.

WCC 관계자에 따르면 박 목사는 아시아와 아프리카, 중남미 등에서 압도적인 지지를 받고 있어서 이변이 없는 한 사무총장 당선이 유력하다.

이 관계자는 "그동안 아시아 지역에서 한번도 사무총장을 배출하지 못해 미국과 유럽을 제외한 나머지 지역 중앙위원들로부터 전폭적인 지지를 받고 있으며, 큰 성장을 이룬 한국교회가 국제적으로 더 많이 기여하기를 바라는 분위기도 작용하고 있다"고 설명했다.

그는 "유엔의 반기문 사무총장에 이어 전세계 개신교회를 대표하는 WCC 사무총장에 박성원 목사가 선출된다면 한국의 국제적 위상이 더욱 높아질 것"이라고 말했다.

한편, 이번 제네바 중앙위원회는 오는 9월1일 2013년 총회 개최지를 결정하는 투표를 실시한다.

한국과 그리스, 시리아, 에티오피아, 이집트 등 5개국이 개최를 신청했고, 한국과 그리스, 시리아 등이 경합 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

7년마다 열리는 WCC 총회는 `개신교계의 올림픽'으로 불릴 정도로 대규모 행사로, 2013년 총회에는 약 7천∼8천 명의 각국 개신교 대표들의 참석이 예상된다. 한국이 다음 개최지로 선정되면 아시아 국가로는 인도에 이어 2번째가 된다.
