호주군 대위로 6.25전쟁에 참전했다가 34살의 나이에 산화한 케네스 존 휴머스톤 씨의 유가족이 최근 사망한 미망인 넨시(90) 씨의 유해를 유엔기념공원에 모시고 싶다는 내용이었다.
전쟁이 끝난지 반세기가 훌쩍 지났지만 11개국 2천300명에 이르는 유엔군 전몰장병의 유해를 모신 유엔기념공원에는 전쟁의 비극과 그로 인한 상처에 아파하는 유가족들의 사연들이 멈추지 않고 오가고 있다.
2006년 12월에도 미국 참전용사의 미망인 A(83) 씨가 유엔기념공원을 방문, 남편과 같이 묻히고 싶다며 결혼증명서 등을 남기고 갔다.
유엔기념공원측은 남편이 전사한뒤에도 수절하며 자식들을 훌륭히 키워낸 미망인 3명이 2001년과 2002년, 2005년에 각각 남편과 함께하고 싶다는 유언에 따라 남편의 묘에 합장된 전례를 들어 A 씨의 요청이 받아들여질 가능성이 높은 것으로 보고 있다.
19살의 나이에 영국군으로 참전한 그룬디(78) 씨는 경찰관으로 근무하다 은퇴한 이후 18년동안 매년 유엔기념공원을 찾고 있다.
그룬디 씨는 6.25 전쟁 때 전우들의 시신을 수습해 부산에 있는 유엔군묘지로 옮기는 일을 해왔기 때문에 전우들이 잠든 유엔기념공원에 대한 애착이 남다르다.
특히 전쟁이 발발한 6월25일을 전후해서 유엔기념공원에는 매년 곳곳에서 추모행사가 열리는 등 국내외 추모객들의 발길이 이어진다.
지난 21일에는 터키 해군 5명과 민주평화통일자문회가, 23일에는 자유총연맹과 부산대 학군단이 각각 추모행사와 참배를 했고 24일에는 부산종교인평화회의가 참배를 한다.
25일에는 재향군인회에서 주최하는 ’UN 전몰용사 추모제’, 29일에는 한국기독교총연합회 참배행사, 7월 2일에는 참전국 청소년 평화캠프단 참배행사가 각각 열린다.
유엔기념공원 박은정 홍보과장은 “한 해 참배객 25만명이 방문하고 있으며 이중 10%에 해당하는 2만5천여명이 외국인”이라며 “참전국은 물론이고 참전하지 않은 나라의 장병들도 부산을 방문하면 꼭 한번 씩 들러 참배하고 간다”고 말했다.
박 과장은 “칠레의 경우 참전국이 아니지만 칠레 해군이 부산을 찾을 때 유엔기념공원 내 프랑스군 묘역에 묻힌 칠레계 프랑스인의 묘를 참배하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
이 처럼 유엔 연합국의 전사자 유해가 안장된 세계 유일의 유엔군 묘지인 유엔기념공원은 1951년 4월 개장한 이후 반세기가 흐르면서 전쟁의 참혹함과 평화의 소중함을 느끼게 하는 ’평화의 성지’로 거듭나고 있다.
유엔기념공원은 전쟁이 끝난 뒤 유엔군 전몰장병의 묘가 미국, 영국, 프랑스, 호주 등 11개국 1만1천여기에 달했으나 자국 송환이 이어지면서 현재는 11개국 2천300기만 남아있다.
남구청은 17만6천486㎡ 면적에 각국 기념비 및 위령탑, 기념동상, 유엔군 위령탑, 유엔군 전몰용사 추모명비, 전시관 등의 시설을 갖추고 있는 유엔기념공원일대를 유엔평화문화특구 조성을 추진하고 있다.
